How the Rules of Golf Apply to the Altadena Golf Course

The Restroom (Behind Hole #1):

The restroom is an immovable obstruction (similar to a cart path). Relief without penalty is granted. Go to nearest point of relief and drop within one club length, no closer to the hole.

The Driving Range &  Fence:

A ball hit into the driving range is “out of bounds”, add one penalty stroke and replay the shot. The entire driving range fence is a “boundary fence” and therefore there is no relief without incurring a penalty stroke. If you cannot play the shot you have two options under penalty of one stroke:

  1. Replay the shot or

  2. Drop within two club lengths of where the ball lies not nearer the hole.

  3. Drop any distance behind the point where the ball lay keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped. This option may not be possible.

The Cable on the right side of the 5th fairway: There is a cable that anchors the driving range fence. If the cable interferes with the swing or stance a player is granted relief (no penalty) and may drop within one club length of the nearest point of relief and not nearer the hole. There is no line of sight relief, however, if the ball strikes the cable the shot can be replayed with no penalty.

OB Behind the 5th Green: The cart path behind the 5th hole is a course boundary and therefore out of bounds.  the curb closest to the #5 green or the south curb of the cart path that separates the course from the practice area/practice green. The imaginary line extends east across the cart path coming from behind #5 towards the driving range.  (Basically a ball on the cart path behind #5 is considered OB).  There is a one stroke penalty and you have to replay the shot from where it was last struck.
The Maintenance Shed (Adjacent to #7). The Shed is a boundary of the course. Play exactly as described in the boundary fence description above.

The Area to the left of #7 Green: The area is used as a collection area for branches and other “fallen” greenery. This should be considered “ground under repair”. The player is allowed to drop without penalty within one club length of the nearest point of relief not nearer the hole.

The Area to the left of the 9th Fairway:   Much of this area is defined by red stakes (lateral hazard). Here are your options:

  1. Play the shot or

Under penalty of one stroke:

    2) Replay the shot

    3) Drop within two club lengths of where the ball entered the hazard not nearer the hole.

    4) Drop any distance behind the point where the ball lay keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped. This option may not be possible on this hole.

Sand Traps:Sand traps are a hazard so therefore you cannot ground your club. A player is allowed to remove any rocks or debris from the bunker.
Fallen Trees/limbs etc.: If a  fallen tree or limbs from trees, (still attached or not) interferes with the lie of the ball, your stance or swing, you may drop (without penalty) within one club length of the nearest point of relief not nearer the hole.

The Drop: Determine the point where you can gain relief from the obstruction/hazard etc. no closer to the hole. Place a tee in the ground where that shot would originate. You now have one or two club lengths from that  point in any direction as long as it is not closer to the hole. Place a tee at the outer edge of the club used. Now stand erect, hold the ball at knee height and drop the ball. If the ball rolls forward, rolls outside the range of the drop area, rolls out of bounds, or to a position where there is interference with the swing a re-drop is necessary. If the ball, when re-dropped, rolls into anyplace listed above then the ball is placed where it first hit the ground.

Post All Rounds: All players are required to post their round “online” either through the AGC website, directly with the SCGA or through the GHIN app. 9 hole rounds are also required to be posted. All rounds should be posted using the Equitable Stroke Control.
